Principal's Chat

Dear East End Parents,

Many of you have questions about how a child qualifies for the GT program beginning in 3rd grade. The state of South Carolina requires that all students are screened for services in GT.   The testing for GT placement begins this Wednesday for our second graders.   This Friday's Principal's Chat will cover the 3 different ways a student can qualify for GT services.   These three areas include:

  • Dimension A – CogAT aptitude (93rd national age percentile) in one or more of the following areas:
    • verbal/linguistic
    • quantitative/mathematical
    • nonverbal
    • and/or a composite of the three
  • Dimension B – ITBS (Iowa Test of Basic Skills)  achievement (94th percentile and above)
  • Dimension C –Score of 16 on either the verbal or nonverbal component of the Performance Task Assessments  (This assessment is administered as a re-test for students who do not qualify during the original testing in 2nd grade, but have a qualifying score  in Dimension A or B that indicates they can participate in the Performance Tasks Assessment.
  • A student can qualify for GT services based on scores in Dimension A alone   •Students may be eligible for placement into the district Gifted and Talented program on the basis of their aptitude score alone.   A composite score on the CogAT® at or above the 96th national age percentile.
  • Students can then qualify for services in GT based on a combination 2 of the three qualifying areas.    I will explain all of this in the Principal's Chat this Friday.

To give us plenty of time to discuss this, our Principal's Chat will begin at 12:30 p.m.  For parents who have students in 3rd, 4th and 5th, we can prepare a handout for your review only of your child's scores in each of these 3 dimensions.  We'll need for you to call the school at 397-1700 and request these as you RSVP about your attendance. Please call by the close of school on Wednesday so that we will have time to gather this data for you.   For those in 2nd grade, we can highlight the information that will apply to each of these three areas for your child.   We ask that everyone who plans to attend to RSVP at 397-1700 so that we can prepare materials for you individually for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders and also prepare enough handouts for all parents in each grade level.  Hope you can join us on Friday at 12:30 p.m.  If you are interested in this session for an upcoming evening, please let us know.  We'll be glad to schedule an evening session.  Hope you can join us this Friday at 12:30 p.m.   Please RSVP to 397-1700.   If you would like an evening session, please respond to this e-mail.  I will be glad to plan one for the upcoming weeks.

It is my hope that this month's Principal's Chat will be helpful to each of you in attendance.

Sincerely,

Tammy Day, principal
